Finally, A Decent One!5
I usually don't go into watching an indie low budget film with many expectations - especially gay ones, because they are usually poorly made and cliche. With A Normal Life, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a quiet little film that slowly captures you when you least expect it, and by the end I was very moved. I almost felt like I was spying on the family next door. Some people may argue that situations like this don't exist anymore, but sadly they are an everyday occurence in most of the US (trust me - I'm originally from the southwest!). I think the director/writer really captured what a family goes through when making decisions about a gay family member. The acting is surprisingly good with a cast of unkowns (though some I recognize a couple from commercials), and the directing is simple and straight-forward. With a genre that's usually all about sex and naked boys, there should definitely be room for more films like this one. I was quite moved - well worth seeing.

Nicely done4
This movie was much better than I expected. I figured it'd be nothin' but S&M scenes, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that there's actually a story there.

A Great Fantasy Movie5
This is a sexy hot movie. A Great fantasy BDSM movie to just have on in the background for enjoyment. The Outfits are great and the actors are beautiful.

All Louzil Breaks Loose!!!!!!!!!!!4
Greetings From Tromaville!!

By now, the most devoted Troma fan knows all about Eric Louzil. He is among the greatest of Troma directors, and he does not let us loyal Tromites down with this gem, "Lust For Freedom".

A former cop who is trying to find herself is framed for possession and is taken to a female prison. Overall, it is a laughably bad movie that boasts a wonderfully cliche' soundtrack done by 80's hair band Grim Reaper.

If you want to see one of Troma's camp classics, check out "Lust For Freedom"! Also check out "Fortress of Amerikkka", "Class of Nuke 'Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown", and "Nuke 'Em High 3" which were also done by Eric Louzil.

The yawn factor.2
Far too much is made of this film simply because the main characters in it are lesbian. Rather than simply look at that if you just watch this film as an erotic thriller similar to Basic Instincts then you have a serious case of the yawn factor.

The film simply does not get going, for a suspense thriller you need well, suspense! The characters are just so dull you get the impression even the actresses are bored and are just praying for the director to say "Cut" so then can go home. The film just drifts along at a walking pace and no sorry, just because the main characters are lesbian is not going to convince me the film is any good.

A poor film that if you can sit through to the end you will be probably kicking yourself you just wasted and hour and a bit of your life when you could have been watching paint dry.

This had it all!!!4
I'm in the photo and film field and I love the way this movie is shot. The way it's filmed is just so beautiful and sexy. The main char's are all charming, beautiful, and clever, with a great deal of verity and depth. The plot is fast paced and hot, full of twist and turns, and you never figure anything out until the last second. This is one of my favorite rainy day movies and any movie you can watch again and again is a great movie. Love this film and the fact that the main character is sexy ten times over doesn't hurt at all. Great film!!!

Lots of Promise, But No Delivery2

I wanted to like this movie. I ordered the DVD hoping it was a controversial satire on the superficiality of the gay ghetto, as promised. What I got was a mildly amusing comedy, with nowhere near as much punch as I expected from the premise.

There were problems immediately. Although he has a perfect body, John-Michael Lander as Christopher portrays a character so unlikable, it's not possible to warm to him at all, let alone develop an interest in what happens to him as the plot progresses. Some may find him irresistibly attractive, but frankly I wouldn't have given him a second glance no matter how much he masked what a creep he is - perfect abs and all. A bigger problem to me was the character played by David Vincent. The film's premise - the brunt of the "hard-hitting satire" - is the fact that Christopher's boyfriend is supposed to be the opposite of what we've been "conditioned" to find attractive because (gasp!) he doesn't work out in a gym and actually has love handles (horrors!). He also doesn't have a glamorous job (I mean, really, who knows any gay men like that?) and - now here's the most shocking thing I could imagine in a satire on gay values - he sleeps in PAJAMAS! Now I know a few guys in Chelsea who might find this impossible to believe, but despite the love handles and the pajamas, the "out-of-shape, chunky, under-employed geek" turns out to be the most attractive man in the whole film. Somehow I think that some of the people this film was intended for won't quite get that.

I liked what this picture was trying to say - Christopher is shallow, superficial, vain and annoying, and more or less gets what he deserves in the end. It's not his promiscuity that bothers us, but the way he treats his conquests, refusing to ever have a second date, and finding the most ridiculous faults imaginable in each potential suitor. But the telling of the tale just isn't very interesting, or very funny, and if they really wanted to make it a satire, it should have been far more merciless to maintain my interest.

Maybe I'm just old enough to remember when gay men didn't spend all their time in a gym, staring at the mirror to confirm their own beauty. I seem to recall that when I first came out in the early 70's, gym bunnies were few and far between in the gay male community. In those days, you were either skinny, fat or average, and if people judged you by your looks, it was solely on the basis of whether or not you had a pretty face. The main things we used back then to attract people were wit, charm, personality and intelligence, along with keeping ourselves reasonably well groomed. Now all I hear and see everywhere is stats, stats and more stats - numbers for waists, chests, arms, and thighs, together with demands that everyone have a perfect body, perfect clothes and a perfect career, or forget it. I was hoping that this film might raise some serious objections to such values, but when the final credits were rolling I felt I hadn't really seen or heard very much to either provoke meaningful discussion or challenge these attitudes, which is what I expect a good satire to do. Some may find it quite enjoyable, and feel it delivers on its promises, but I was less than satisfied when it was over.

Stereotypical Gay Characters2
This movie reminded me of the series QAF, with characters that you love to hate. Some of the things they have in common:
Stereotypical gay characters, lead egocentric characters, over the top drama, and typical bar behavior.
In addition this movie adds overbearing gawd-awful music and unrealistic camp in almost every scene.
Why did I give it 2 stars? Even though I thought the confrontational ending was a bit over the top, I liked it. The message got through to the audience. I did ask myself, however, why the confronting person felt that he was morally superior when he himself was still lurking in the bar's dark corners.
Denial of reality all around here but still worth 2 stars for providing us with *some* hope.

Yossi and Jagger5
I loved this tragic love story.Brilliant acting by the entire cast,Ohad Knoller and Yehuda Levy were outstanding!

A beautiful surprise5
This is without a doubt, the sweetest yet most poignant love story I have ever seen on film, which is astounding given its totally atypical setting. Yossi and Jagger are Israeli military conscripts, part of a platoon guarding an icy, isolated outpost. Unknown to everyone around them, they are also lovers. Jagger (played by Yehuda Levi) is the free-spirited one, more comfortable with his sexuality, who wants the world to know about his love. He's about to finish his service with the army and has dreams of eventually living openly with the love of his life.

Yossi on the other hand (played by Ohad Knoller) - who just happens to also be Jagger's commanding officer - is more restrained and intent on keeping his sexual orientation and his relationship private. All the while, Ya'eli, a beautiful female soldier (played by Aya Steinovitz) pines for Jagger but he's patently oblivious to her love for him. Thus the scene is set for an engrossing story. Some interesting issues about homosexuality are raised, some stereotypes are challenged and myths destroyed. I was blown away. The movie reminded me of the 2005 movie Jarhead (Widescreen Edition), in that the largest proportion of it is spent watching soldiers waiting for something to happen. It finally does though, and there are tragic consequences.

What I love most of all about this movie is the way it neatly (and wisely) sidesteps the political realities of the region by refraining from introducing us to the enemy the Israeli army are fighting. They are never even mentioned by name. We can guess whom they might be fighting but we'll never know for sure. We are thus able to focus on the real story here without any distractions. At just over an hour long, the movie is notably short but director Eytan Fox ensures that it manages to tell its story with no compromise. "Unusually subtle and convincing," said the New York Times, "A searing, tense and beautifully told film," said the Philadelphia Inquirer. I say believe them both. It's apparently based on a true story and has brilliantly drawn supporting characters, most notable of all (from a personal standpoint) being Ophir, played by Assi Cohen. I will be watching one this again and again.

DVD extras include a song from the movie (Jagger loved it), a stills gallery featuring some of the movie's stars and trailers of other TLA releases. The movie is in Hebrew with optional English subtitles.

PS. As a companion piece to this movie, I highly recommend the 2001 documentary Trembling Before G-D, which tells in accurate detail how difficult it can be to be lesbian or gay if you're also Jewish - whether you live in Israel or indeed anywhere else in the world.

Beautifully romantic army Love story4
A film that stays in my mind with me even though a year since I first played it. It is touching, romantic and sad - all things to which a film of this genre should aspire. It is short enough to have immediate deep impact, long enough for me to keep remembering it again, and again. Beautifully acted and directed, put together by a fine team.
