~What a MOVIE~~ Love Rosalind Russell~5
I have loved this movie since I first saw it in the movie theatre as a child. Talk about entertaining, this movie is wonderful!

This Is A Feel-Good Movie!5
I absolutely adore this movie. Rosalind Russel plays a wonderful, kind, madcap, joyous, wise woman who loves and attracts love in kind. No serial killers, rapists, murderers, obscenity, nudity, hopelessness, or cynicism -- nothing negative. Just joyous life, lived to the full, spilling over on everyone. It's a place to go and rest from CNN, the presidential race, and network TV for a couple of hours!

Slightly disappointed5
Loved this Auntie Mame all over again and bought copies for my grandkids. However I'm disappointed that Rosalind's solo has been cut. Her introspective solo asked herself was she too hard on the boy or too easy and would she have done things differently. Since I was raising my own children at the time, the haunting lyrics and music of that solo have stuck with me over the years since I saw her performance years ago. I was sure looking forward to hearing it again and sharing it with my kids. (sigh)

GLORIAT5
AWESOME. NOTHING HAS CHANGED SINCE FIRST SEEING IT. GLAD TO HAVE THIS ONE IN MY LIBRARY NOW.

Back Where She Belongs!!!5
When this movie came out in 1969, the country was in social turmoil and this light-as-a-feather story was relegated to the "has-been" file. Add the fact that Barbra Streisand (a girl of 26 at the time) was asked to play the widow Dolly!!!

But now one can enjoy this movie for what is - a happy-step, smile-on-your-face piece of escapism. The movie moves quickly with quirky characters, fantastic songs, and some of the best mugging Streisand has ever put on film.

Spend a Sunday morning in your jammies with a cup of hot chocolate, and just let this wonderful film take you to a happy place.

Don't let the parade pass you by!4
A huge hit on Broadway, Hello Dolly was a very controversial film in its time, and still gets Barbra Streisand and movie musical fans riled up from time to time. Most of the controversy came from the fact that Barbra Streisand, a then-questionable box office draw, was hired over Carol Channing, who originated the role on Broadway to great praise. In the end, Barbra shows that she can do a role she probably never should have been considered for.

The best things about the movie are the musical numbers, which Streisand only shines brightly in. She sounds great in "Just Leave Everything to Me," brings great energy to "Put on Your Sunday Clothes," and looks beautiful in "Hello Dolly," a duet with Louis Armstrong that has great chemistry. In fact, despite Streisand's admittant insecurity about her part, and the fact that, at 27, she was too young to be playing a middle-aged spinster, she is the only reason to watch this movie. It is funny to think that the biggest mistake of the movie turned out to be the film's only saving grace.

Unfortunately, there are some glaring flaws in the movie. For one thing, Streisand and her leading man, Walter Matthau, have no chemistry on screen (the two famously hated each other in real life), making their love story uninvolving at best. Also, between musical numbers, the movie drags, sometimes painfully so, and even some of the musical numbers with Barbra absent are, at their best, mediocre.

Despite these problems, I'd have to say the movie is, all and all, a good time had by anyone who watches. Not a classic, but entertaining nonetheless.

A Severely Under-Rated Film, and a Delightful Night at the Movies5
To begin with, I don't understand why Captain Blood is frequently dismissed, only considered worth mentioning because it was the film that made Errol Flynn a star. I'll admit that I'm a relative novice when it comes to classic pirate films as well as classic Flynn films (I haven't even seen Robin Hood yet!), but this film was so rich that I can't imagine a wider knowledge of the genre diminishing its grandeur.

I approached this film looking for a good sword-fight. I'd never seen a swash-buckler film and felt I was missing out. In that respect, Captain Blood might almost seem like a disappointment. It takes a very long time to get to any real action, and there's only one memorable duel in the film. However, what I found instead was an instantly likable, earthy protagonist, at war with himself as well as his nation, all while cracking witty one-liners and endearing the audience with his vibrant sincerity. Add to this a highly compelling plot about revenge and self-realization, a masterful ensemble cast, countless laugh-out-loud moments that truly feel earned as opposed to obligatory, excellent pacing that manages to prevent a two hour film from ever feeling dull, a very convincing and endearing romantic sub-plot, and exceptional special effects for the time period (delivered in excess at the film's climax). No, the action doesn't come quickly or frequently in this film, but what you get in its place makes the wait more than worthwhile. My wife and I will be watching this film again and again.

I think it's also worthwhile to mention Leonard Maltin's "Warner Night at the Movies," included on this disk. It features a hand-picked selection of short reels that would have been shown at the movies along with Captain Blood in 1935. I've always wanted to see something like this on a DVD extra features menu. Finally, I can see a classic film in something close to its original context, amidst a myriad of reels from varied genres -- a true Depression Era variety show. Each of the reels has a charm of its own, from the explicitly budget-conscious trailer for A Midsummer Night's Dream ("At Popular Prices") to a news reel in which Bruno Hauptmann is sentenced to death for kidnapping the Lindburgh baby and FDR pledges to keep the United States out of the emerging conflict in Europe. Add Charlie McCarthy, an early Warner Brothers cartoon, and a big band performance to the equation, and you're set for one fine evening at the 1930s movies. My only regret with this feature is that you can't watch all the reels together. Each must be accessed individually on the special features menu.

Regarding the particulars of this transfer of the film, the picture is quite clear, and, though a few lines of dialogue get lost here and there, the sound is relatively good for a film from the mid-1930s.

All in all, this is a treasure of a DVD. Any fan of classic films, pirate or otherwise, would be amiss to pass this one up.

Errol at work again5
Like all of his films, Errol Flynn cuts the dashing figure. Called from his bed to aid a wounded Nobleman (Irish fighting the English), DR. Blood is arrested for treason. Guilty for saving a wounded man (who fought against King James, He and the Irish are sent to Port Royal to be sold as slaves/indentured servants (if they live that long). He is purchased by Olivia de Haviland (she wants to save him from a terrible fate) even so he doesn't appreciate her help. Later he succeeds by various means to save himself and his fellows whereupon they become pirates. Eventually, he returns Olivia's favor. After some fine sword play he rescues the girl, but he is not out of the woods yet.... (I'm not telling the end...). It is great fun in the spirit of these old films and for those that love them it is time well spent.

Captain blood3
it is a very exciting film with a good story and a good cast although its b&w it dosn't dilute from the story

Still amazing after all these years5
I saw Chinatown when it first came out in theaters and liked it a lot. But I have to say that I enjoyed it even more now. There is so much to see and appreciate. First of all, the script is amazing--so much better than the usual gumshoe flicks. Then there is the perfect cast: Nicholson is at the top of his game as the crass but great hearted P.I. Dunaway is beautiful and appropriately mysterious, strange, and vulnerable, John Houston will give you the heebie geebies for a week with his charming presence that hides dreadful secrets. The direction is masterful. LA looks beautiful in the sun drenched light.

So many films that were lauded at the time don't hold up over the years, but this one really does. I highly recommend it.

Excellent movie5
This was a very well done movie with an engaging plot, that despite its length never seemed to drag on. I'd certainly recommend it.

"You may think you know what you're dealing with, but, believe me, you don't."4
Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private investigator. He solves all sorts of marital issues by providing suspecting wives or husbands with photographic proof that their loves ones aren't so loyal. When a high falooting dame struts into his office asking him to follow her wealthy husband around, he thinks nothing of it but the big paycheck it will bring him. Soon, though, he finds himself investigating a murder and some deeply seeded corruption among the leaders of the community. Complete with femme fatal, the real wife of the deceased (Faye Dunaway), this story mirrors the film noir genre of the 1940s and 50s.

The film starts out slowly but toward the end picks up rapidly for a startling and exciting finish. The use of 1930s decor is impressive; nothing seems to be used for the sake of art. Everything is seamlessly utilized by the actors so they appear to be living in the era, not merely participating in a costume film. Director Roman Polanski brings an exciting film movement into the modern era with use of violence and sex but none of it in excess. Viewers are not overwhelmed because no tactics are utilized without reason. Everything has its purpose; the deliberateness of the film makes it masterful.

Some might be put off by certain elements of this movie, especially those who prefer the class of classic Hollywood. This film spares no one and shows that even the most admirable characters have their demons.

A Screwball Social Comedy5
Often cited as a masterpiece of the screwball genre because of Carole Lombard's hilarious and endearing performance as Irene Bullock, Gregory La Cava's finest film is also very much a social comedy in the Frank Capra vein. It tackles many of the same issues as the darker "Meet John Doe" but in a more upbeat and funny manner, its message somewhat overshadowed by Lombard's Irene and Powell's dapper but troubled Godfrey.

William Powell requested his ex-wife Lombard for the role of Irene and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the part. Sometimes overlooked, however, is Powell's brilliantly shaded turn as Godfrey, a man running from his family's money and influence after having his heart broke by a woman. Traveling and living as a hobo, he fits right in with others bitter and lost during the depression.

Being a denizen of society's upper crust hasn't prepared him for the likes of Irene Bullock and her family, however. From the moment he gives in to her wish that he come with her as a "forgotten man" and become her "Cornelia beater" in a scavenger hunt, he becomes a part of the family and teaches them all some valuable lessons.

Eugene Pallette is marvelous as the harrassed father in financial trouble trying to curtail his family's high living and crazy lifestyle. Gail Patrick is a perfect contrast to Lombard's sweet and ditzy Irene as her cold and scheming sister, Cornelia. Mischa Auer gives a crazy performance as a moocher funded by Irene's mom. But it's really the chemistry of Powell and Lombard that holds it all together.

Irene, who has no idea Godfrey is living in the dump by choice, falls head over heels for him. He in turn, numb from being hurt, and not ready to open that door again yet, puts his energy into transforming that dump into a working place where men can feel useful again. While he works for the Bullock's, however, Irene works his way into his heart.

Lombard works her way into the filmgoer's heart as well, giving one of the great comedic performances in sound film. This is a marvelous film from the 1930's which blends social commentary with screwball comedy perhaps better than any other from the era. Powell is magnificent here, and if you've never seen Lombard, you'll be a big fan after seeing her here for the first time. A real gem.

Annoying RE logo in the bottom right corner 2
This is a great movie. However there is an annoying RE logo in the bottom right corner throughout the whole picture. The only reason we do not return it is that it only cost $8... Some day a more professional version will be available and we will purchase it.

William Powell is at his best5
A dysfunctional but seemingly wealthy family takes in a new butler of dubious background. In return the butler saves the family in more ways than one. (This is a comedy)

I really appreciate this movie on many levels. You may recognize several people types just in the Bullock family. The interaction between Carole Lombard and William Powell is worth watching in its self. I particularly like when Tommy Gray (Alan Mowbray) has to explain his earlier relationship with Godfrey.

As good as this movie is I still like the remake with David Niven and June Allyson just as well. My Man Godfrey (1957) but many of his movies are hard to find. Such as "The Statue" and "Prudence and the pill."

My Man Godfrey Starring: June Allyson, David Niven

HOUSE CALLS IN THE SNOW5
David Lean's extraordinary, expansive telling of Boris Pasternak's love-triangle story, set amidst the Russian Revolution. Omar Sharif is stunning as the title character (he's a doctor and a poet so how can he miss?) and Julie Christie is very lovely as Lara, the politically committed nurse he falls for over wife Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin). It is at once an intimate epic, superbly acted and impeccably crafted in every department. With Alec Guiness, Rod Steiger, Ralph Richardson, Tony Courtenay, Siobhan McKenna, Rita Tushingham, Klaus Kinski and many others. The highly memorable, Oscar-winning score is by Maurice Jarre. Other Academy Awards included screenplay (Robert Bolt), cinematography (Freddie Young) and art direction (John Box). Director Lean's particularly dynamic use of the wide Panavision screen means inevitably some loss of impact of television.

One of my favorite movies of all time...5
I will not count myself near the orator nor the writer as some of those that have reviewed this movie previously, however, as a fan of the writer and the movie... I wanted to say that as far as sentiment and depth are concerned? It captured A LOT. This was indeed a beautifully written, scripted, acted, and directed movie... certainly worth your time and open-minded hearts. A lot to be learned from Boris Pasternak... from what I've read? He, himself, went through a lot of dramatic history in his day... and was humble enough to share his learning experiences through writt and poetry... the least we can do is read his books or watch movies that were so diligently created to respect his stories... Again, this movie was amazing.

Doctor Zhivago4
Lavish film about the Russian Revolution of 1917. Russia pulled out of World War I when it went Communist. Omar Sharif is Zhivago, an idealistic doctor torn between his wife and Julie Christie. Zhivago's ambiguity is mirrored in his poetry, judged too personal by the new order. We see the paradox of art and science. Zhivago's half-brother tells the story to a girl believed to be the offspring of the illicit affair. It is the formula for historical fiction, made up characters living their lives against sweeping events. There are some hauntingly beautiful scenes, snow and springtime flowers.

Good underlying story, but a highly overrated classic film.3
Although Rebel Without a Cause has to be given credit for its groundbreaking portrayal of teenage angst, all in it's is a pretty wooly affair with some hammy performances and gloppy sentimentality.

To begin with, Nicholas Ray never could say anything with much subtlety -- he's like one of those beat poet cliches from the 1950s who take themselves oh-so-serious and are like down with system, man. So, from the first frame RWAC slathers on the message with a cake spatula. We are supposed to be totally sympathetic to the troubled James Dean character and his existential plight through being a 20-something teenager. He looks about 10 years too old but alas I digress. He sees the ridiculous marriage of his parents as a stark warning of the horrors that surely await in his future. If this were handled really well it could have a lot of traction, but unfortunately it is played sporadically and is too hyperbolic (in all the wrong ways) to have much resonance.

Along for the ride is a horribly miscast Natalie Wood, who cannot seem to deliver a single one of her lines correctly. She too is a confused young teen, but about what we have no idea and she just spends the movie alternately acting like a brat or a dweeb. This unrelenting subplot of the film is simply godawful.

Sal Mineo gets the most demanding part, that of the true outcast. If the film has one strength it is in this character's delusional nature that in fact is a brilliant interpretation of many of the most disturbed High Schoolers I knew. Alas, Sal Mineo does little to endear Dino to the audience and the film just doesn't spend enough time on his pathos. It still treats him as a curiosity and suffers from the same hepcat detachment that runs through the entirety of Ray's direction.

I love the 1950s, and I love the idea behind Rebel Without a Cause, but in the end the film is just not live up to its reputation and is mired by so many layers of hokum (the soundtrack...total dreck) that it is just not a real tour-de-force. And I still don't get what all the fuss is about the totally overwrought James Dean. For my money, "The Wild One" is a much more fun film that covers similar ground. Still, for people looking to see that their teen angst had a timeless lineage, it will be tempting to see Rebel Without a Cause as a masterpiece for manipulating that selfsame emotion.

REBELS WITH A CAUSE4
This film has always bugged me for any number of reasons.First, the title is a total misfit. Every adolescent star has a cause for rebellion. Dean's father (Backus) is a real piece of work, his mother is Napoleonic, and Granny does nothing but help reinforce Mommy.Woods'father belongs in ICU AT Bellevue, or behind bars for abuse.Mineo is the proverbial misit whose psychiatric treatments have been cut off.Secondly, even though director Nicholas Ray gave Dean plenty of room to improvise, we are left with 2 dead, 1 wounded, one knife attack, multiple arrests, with the elder Backuses smiling at day's end, all within 18 hours in suburbia 1955. Realism? Next, we have a superb acting job by the 3 protagonists, but silly, often unprofessional acting by all that surround them. Who's running the zoo? Finally, I'll go to my grave believing that "East of Eden" was Dean's best effort, with this film a mere symbol of what might have been.

I fell in love with Natalie Wood....5
I agree this movie was a great talent launch for Dean, Salminio, and especially Natalie Wood. Most reviewerers see this as a great movie "Vehicle" for Dean and Salminio. Natalie Wood takes a "back seat" view in this movie...She will for ever be my most favortite movie star of all time. Its interesting that all three had a short, violent death...Dean in his famous car wreck, Salminio Stabed, still in his early years, and Natalie a mysterious drowning which details were never fully disclosed...fell in the water, Drowned...end of story. But after this movie she went on to make wounderful movies..Her emotional talent range was fantastic! Natalie and Elizabeth Taylor, whom had a close reseblance, I heard, their identy was often confused by vieweres in that era. Of course Taylors..wild public life, placed HER in the main spotlight. But next time you see this movie try to see the emotion and depth that Natalie put into it. They didnt have "Ensemble Catagorie" for the Academy Awards back then, but they shure had my vote....I didnt get into the details of this movie because if you havent seen it, the reviews are a plenty.... Just wanted to share my view on Nataile Wood, sort bright flame to soon extinguished.

It still sparkles5
What's not to like with this classic, original screwball comedy? It still holds up after all this time, and Clark Gable is as sexy as ever with those pervasive dimples and ironic grin.

If you crave some real star quality, some Hollywood [as well as American] history, get this film now. The chemistry between Gable and Colbert makes this movie hum, and compared to the drek we get today both in our "stars" and the scripts, it is a stellar piece of art.

Heartily recommended!

TO THE WINNER GOES THE SPOILED5
Since ths reviewer seems to be on an "oldies" kick of late, certainly this film has to be included. And why not? The movie swept the Oscars for a production of 1934 vintage, and of all the movies made in this era, this one seems to stand up today, after 74 years, as best. The opening credits are absolutely childish; one would swear that he or she were about to watch a silent film. End of swearing! Capra's direction flies at the viewer at a lightning pace. Spoiled rich girl Colbert seems as natural as any seasoned actress, and Gable's famed barking quickly turns to love, albeit none too tenderly. The plot is simplistic; no need to embellish a theme repeated hundreds of times. But, just imagine even one short sex scene in a 2008 remake completely ruining the movie. (We thought Psycho-2 was terrible for other reasons). No, the chemistry between the budding lovers is just fine, thank you; even an idiot can tell where this duet is heading. One story, perhaps apochryphal, has Colbert showing up late for the Oscar ceremony, leaving a cabbie waiting outside the theater, running down the aisle, accepting the award , and running back outside jumping into the cab. As Gable had said in the movie: "All you dames are so darned dizzy".

Classic Comedy - Stands the Test of Time5
One of two GREAT movies to sweep all 5 major Academy Awards. Just watched the movie again recently with the kids. Pure classic entertainment for the whole family.
