DISTURBIA IN SUBURBIA!
'Disturbia' is one of the those films that has that "seen it all before" feel to it. It does have a few thrills along with a good cast but,on the down side some of the characters do some really stupid things. Normally I can overlook some of this but, when it effects the authenticity of the story, it hurts the overall experience. It's worth a look but, rent it before you buy it.
never spy on your neighbors
Disturbia is a really good suspense movie. It's about a teenager who is under house arrest for punching his teacher in the face. While in his home all day, he has nothing to do but start a hobby where he spies on his neighbors all day. This turns out to be both good AND bad. Good in that, his new neighbor turns out to be an attractive female around his age, and he develops a relationship with her as the story goes along. Bad in that, you guessed it, one of the neighbors is a killer.
Throughout the movie you're left guessing whether this supposed killer is actually doing any killing, or whether the teenager is just imagining all the things he believes he sees. There's also some humor thrown into the mix, but it never occurs during any inappropriate moments- the suspense parts are definitely believable and it's overall a good movie that kept my interest. Are there better suspense movies out there? Absolutely. But I enjoyed this one.
A murderer next door
Kale Brecht is an angry teen with plenty of reasons for melancholy. He witnessed his father's tragic death in a car accident in which he was the passenger. Blaming himself, he has a very rough year involving several run-ins with the law. In a fit of rage, Kale, played by Shia LaBeouf (Transformers, Indiana Jones 4), sucker punches his Spanish teacher in class. His surprisingly lenient sentence is three months house arrest, given only because he has not yet turned eighteen.
The crux of Disturbia (Full Screen Edition) is what the main characer does to fill his time. While his friends are partying in Hawaii for the summer, Kale quietly observes the neighborhood through binoculars and fancy camera equipment. Mostly he watches an attractive new neighbor (Sarah Roemer) whose only outfit seems to be a very tight, pink two-piece bikini. But after weeks of watching the neighbors go about their business, Kale notices certain patterns. He knows that when the middle-aged woman next door goes to tennis practice, her husband gets touchy with the maid. He knows when the shut-in mows his lawn. And he notices an older man with a suspicious vehicle and an affinity for scantily-clad young women, one of whom never leaves his house after a one-night-stand.
The trouble with being on house arrest is your credibility is shot. His mother, friends and even the police do not believe him when he warns about the secretive neighbor. The welcome climax comes after mmuch prolonged suspense. Certainly the premise is Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window but there is some of Saw, The Silence of the Lambs (Widescreen Special Edition) and even I Know What You Did Last Summer. There is a strong cast around Shia LaBeouf, including Aaron Yoo, David Morse and Carrie-Ann Moss. Disturbia (Widescreen Edition) is a surprisingly good film destined for blockbuster nights everyone.
